Using Debbie
Simple, fair terms.
These terms cover Debbie’s information library, the Kitchen Table, first-person story walls, In loving memory and optional financial contributions.
What Debbie is
Debbie is a free, independent signposting and support platform for people affected by cancer. It is not an NHS service, healthcare provider, counselling service or emergency service.
Information, not medical advice
Content is general information and cannot replace advice from your cancer team, GP, specialist nurse or pharmacist. Do not start, stop or change treatment because of anything on Debbie. In an emergency, call 999. For urgent medical help, call 111 in England, Scotland or Wales; in Northern Ireland, contact your GP out-of-hours service.
External organisations
Links are provided to make established support easier to find. An organisation’s inclusion does not mean that it endorses Debbie, and Debbie cannot control its content, availability or services. Check important information directly with the organisation.
Acceptable use
Do not use Debbie to attack or harass people, spread malware, scrape personal information, impersonate someone, evade safety controls, promote scams or interfere with the service.
Kitchen Table contributions, first-person stories and memorials must also follow the community standards. The pilot accepts submissions only from people aged 18 or over.
Sending a Kitchen Table contribution
You must submit only words you are entitled to share and protect other people’s privacy. You keep ownership of your contribution. You give Refreshing Media Ltd a non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to review it and, if selected, display the version shown in your preview on Debbie under your chosen display name. The service may normalise line endings and replace en or em dash characters with ordinary hyphens, as the preview shows, but it will not rewrite your contribution.
Sending something does not guarantee publication. If the submitted wording cannot be published safely, we may hold or decline it and invite a fresh submission. We may remove published material to protect people, comply with law or maintain the purpose of the Kitchen Table.
Sending a first-person story
Living with cancer and Life beyond treatment are for your own experience. Protect other people's privacy and do not present personal experience as medical advice. If you include a photograph, it must show only you during the pilot, and you must own its copyright or have the copyright owner's permission for Refreshing Media Ltd to check, resize, re-encode, remove embedded metadata from, store and display it publicly.
You keep ownership of your words and photograph. You give Refreshing Media Ltd a non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to review them and, if selected, display the exact story and optional photograph shown in your preview. Sending a story does not guarantee publication. We may hold, decline, unpublish or remove a photograph or the whole story to protect people, respect rights, comply with law or preserve the purpose of these spaces.
Sending an In loving memory memorial
You may submit only a genuine and respectful memorial. You must own the tribute or have permission to share it. If you include a photograph, you must own its copyright or have permission from its copyright owner for Refreshing Media Ltd to upload, check, resize, re-encode, remove embedded metadata from, store and display it publicly on Debbie. Owning a print, receiving a copy or appearing in a photograph does not necessarily mean that you own its copyright.
A photograph may include identifiable living adults only when every one of them has agreed to that exact photograph appearing publicly on Debbie. During the initial pilot, do not include an identifiable living person who is currently under 18. Do not include private documents, addresses or contact details. You keep ownership of your words and photograph. You give Refreshing Media Ltd a non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to perform the processing described above and, if selected, display the exact memorial shown in your preview. Sending something does not guarantee publication. We may hold, decline, unpublish or remove a photograph or the whole memorial to protect people, respect rights, comply with law or preserve the purpose of the memorial wall.
Removal, reports and complaints
You can ask us to replace or remove a Kitchen Table contribution through private contribution management. For a first-person story or memorial, contact us from the private email used to submit it so we can verify the request. Anybody can report published community content. We can remove a photograph or whole item from public view while a concern is checked. We will review reports according to their potential risk, but these areas are not continuously monitored and cannot provide urgent help. You can also make a safety complaint or ask for a fresh reconsideration without creating an account.
Availability and changes
We aim to keep Debbie useful and available but cannot promise uninterrupted access. We may correct, update or remove content and links. Material changes to the final terms will be dated and explained.
Optional contributions
Access to Debbie does not depend on making a contribution. Contributions are received by Refreshing Media Ltd to help operate and develop the platform. Debbie is not a charity, contributions do not buy access or services, and Gift Aid is not available. Payment, cancellation and refund information appears on the Support Debbie page.
Operator and governing law
Debbie is operated by Refreshing Media Ltd, registered in England and Wales under company number 11708819. Its registered office is 100 Lodge Road Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, ST4 6RH.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. Nothing in them removes mandatory rights or protections that apply to you. Use the safety complaints and reconsideration route or email safety@debbie.org.uk with a complaint.
